BIOGRAPHY

Synyster Gates was born Brian Elwin Haner, Jr. in Huntington Beach, California on July 7th, 1981. He was born to Brian Haner, Sr and Jan Gera, with whom they had one other child, Brent. They split when he was younger and his father remarried Suzy Haner, and had one child with her, McKenna, younger than Brian. His mother has a child from her second marriage, named Johnny. He's played guitar since he was young, when he picked up a guitar and started to try and learn Jimmy Page's solos, ignoring his father's warnings. His father is a studio musician, working for bands such as Frank Zappa.

Gates was born to Brian Haner Sr. and Jan Gera. He has one full brother Brent. His parents got divorced and both got remarried. He has one half brother Johnny from his mom's second marriage and a half sister McKenna from his dad's second marriage to suzy haner (Gates' step mother). The Rev also lived with him for a short period of time. His father was a guest star on Jeff Dunham as Guitar Guy.

How they met: They've known each other since the eighth grade and got together due to two drunken hookups. Gates states he wants to take it slow.

Tattoos/piercings and other notable features: He has a full sleeve of monsters tattooed on his right arm, performing a form of torture involving surgery on one particular monster (the only reason he cites is that "I like monsters"); another monster scene on his left arm; purple and green flames on both of his wrists; "Haner" tattooed across his back (he dislikes it due to its amateur quality and rough design, so he never takes his shirt off); he also has a VII tattooed behind his left ear (similar to The Rev's), the number one on his right thumb (his first tattoo), 'blue blood' over his left pectoral, "MARLBORO" tattooed on his knuckles, and a coffin tattooed on the inside of his left middle finger (which is a friendship tattoo between a7x and Good Charlotte). CARRER HIGHLIGHTS

Background in music: His father is a studio musician, so he's been around music his entire life. He went to Music Institute of Technology, was accepted into the guitar program, but he dropped out when The Rev recruited him to play lead guitar in Avenged Sevenfold. Upcoming plans: When asked recently, Both Gates and The Rev, their new side project being planned featuring the 2 playing old Pinkly Smooth songs.

Side projects: He was in a band called Pinkly Smooth with fellow bandmate, a7x drummer, The Rev. Both him and The Rev later quit so they could focus on Avenged Sevenfold. The have also mentioned that he and The Rev were planning to work on yet another side project, which as of now is unnamed.

EARLY LIFE

Haner attended Mayfair High school in Lake Wood, but he later transferred and graduated from Fountain Valley High school in Huntington Beach,California

He studied at the Musician Institute in Hollywood as part of the Guitar institute technology program, studying jazz guitar. After six or so months of being there, he got a phone call from The Rev asking him if he wanted to join his band, Avenged Sevenfold as lead guitarist. Haner joined rather than continuing his education and becoming a studio musician. Up until that time he was primarily self-taught by watching music videos and reading books. His father, Brian Haner Sr. , is a comedian, songwriter, and guitarist.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD

Gates joined Avenged Sevenfold when he was 18 at the end of 1999, right before the recording of the band's first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. He was featured on the EP Warmness on the Soul, and on the reissue of the band's first album.

Gates became the band's official lead guitarist. After Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, the band has released 4 studio albums: Waking the Fallen, City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare and a live DVD/CD Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough.

On the Avenged Sevenfold DVD All Excess, Gates claimed that his name was created on a drunken drive through the park with The Rev.

He has won numerous awards, including the 2006 Metal Hammer "Young Shredder" award and the 2006 Total Guitar Magazine "Guitarist of the Year."

In Revolver magazine, the Avenged Sevenfold special edition that was released the same day as the Nightmare album, Gates stated that he originally started out writing the song "So Far Away" in honor of his grandfather, it later on became to also honor his late bandmate The Rev as well.

PINKLY SMOOTH

Haner, along with The Rev, played in an avant-garde metal band named Pinkly Smooth. Formed in the summer of 2001 in Huntington Beach, California, the band featured ex-Ballistico members Buck Silverspur on bass and D-Rock on drums. The band has released one album, Unfortunate Snort on Bucktan Records, which features a crossover sound of mostly punk, ska and avant-garde. Former Avenged Sevenfold bassist Justin Meacham played keyboards and piano on the album. There was speculation that Pinkly Smooth was going to produce another record, but due to the death of The Rev, it is highly unlikely that they will produce any more material. However, Synyster Gates has said that he would consider remastering the tracks from Unfortunate Snort and re-releasing the album

Facts:
• Syn joined A7X in 1999, before the release of Sounding the Seventh trumpet. He was originally in a gobblin metal band called Pinkly Smooth with A7X Drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. Pinkly Smooth was disbanded because Brian and Jimmy wanted to devote all their time to A7X. In a recent interview, Syn said he was hoping to possibly remaster the old Pinkly Smooth demo type album and possibly release some material that has never been heard by the public.

• Syn has written two songs with James Hart of Burn Halo. The titles are "Dirty Lil Girl" and "anejo".

• Syn made a cameo appearance in the video "Diry Lil Girl" the song he wrote with James Hart of Burn Halo.

• Syns’s grandpa rode from Arizona on a personally made custom bike to California and joined the Air Force. Brian is very close to his grandfather. Syn's Grandfather has now passed away.

• Syn’s custom chopper was created by Lucky 7 Choppers.

• Susie Haner is not Syn’s mother. His mom and dad are divorced. He has one brother, Brent, a half sister, McKenna, (father) and a half brother, Johnny (mother). Syn’s real mothers name is Jan Gera.

• Syn has a sevier allergy to bee stings. He almost died from a reaction to one when he was a child. He also says a bee sting is the one thing he really fears.

• Syn’s favorite color is Purple. He decided he liked the color in elementary school.

• At last count, Syn reported having in excess of 268 total assorted hats. The guys joke about having to wait to check the hats on airplanes and that his hat collection has to have its own seat during travel. Jimmy claimed the hat box often took his seat.

• Syn married Michelle Dibennedetto (Twin to Val Sanders) in Mexico on May 7th, 2010. He had his bachelor party in Las Vegas.

• A few years ago Syn developed an infection of the pericardium also known as pericarditis (The sac around his heart). He had all the classic symptoms of a heart attack but, did not actually have one, and he was very sick. He of course made a full recovery.

• Syn has a dog that goes by Pinkly. Pinkly can be seen on the MVI that was sold with the Avenged Sevenfold CD.

• Syn is sponsored by Schecter Guitars and has his own line of guitars including the Syn Custom which looks identical to the black and white one he plays regularly on stage.

• Syn hates to restring his guitars and this fact has delayed production on their albums in the past. He says he would rather they be put on right so he sends them back to Schecter Guitars for restringing.

• Syn probably started playing the guitar at 9 years old but didn't get serious about it until he was 11.

• Syn is the son of Brian Haner Sr. a country guitarist/stand-up comedian who is often referred to as Papa Gates by the Avenged Sevenfold Fans and now as Git guy.
